Culpeper Technical Education Center (CTEC) proudly announces the exceptional achievement of its inaugural class in the Medical Assistant Program. Fifteen dedicated students have successfully passed their National Healthcareer Association Certified Medical Assistant certification test, marking a significant milestone for both the students and the program.

The Medical Assistant Program at CTEC, taught by Jeanie Barlow, offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the dynamic field of healthcare. Throughout the program, students immerse themselves in fundamental subjects including basic anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical ethics, medical asepsis, medical terminology, medical mathematics, and legal responsibilities. Furthermore, students develop essential competencies in assisting healthcare providers and other medical professionals in patient examinations, basic emergency care, simple laboratory tests, and administrative duties.

In addition to rigorous coursework, students explore various career pathways in the medical assisting field through participation in HOSA-Future Health Professionals and potential on-the-job clinical instruction and observation in healthcare facilities. This immersive approach not only prepares students for the demands of the profession but also provides invaluable insights into the diverse opportunities available in the healthcare industry.

Randi Richards-Lutz, CCPS Director of Career and Technical Education said, "As the healthcare industry continues to expand rapidly in our region and across the state, this program plays a vital role in meeting the growing demand for qualified medical assistants."  She continued, "The future of these students is bright. Their diligent efforts this year warrant immense pride in their accomplishments. Mrs. Barlow has created an exceptional program and her passion and dedication is evident.”

According to recent projections, available jobs in the healthcare industry are expected to grow by 20% over the next decade, significantly outpacing the average for all occupations. By becoming certified medical assistants, students not only gain exposure to the professional expectations of healthcare providers but also position themselves for diverse and rewarding career opportunities in this thriving sector.

Reflecting on the success of the program’s first year, Barlow said, "I am blessed to have this opportunity to give back to my community by sharing my expertise with our students. My goal is to mold these young souls into healthcare workers that I would be proud to work alongside and that my contribution will help enrich the future of healthcare."
