The CTEC Fire Class #2 is progressing steadily through its coursework on the foundations of the fire service. This week’s focus was communications. Training covered radio systems, dispatch protocols, and incident command communication practices. Students participated in real-time communication exercises during simulated emergencies, developing the ability to send and receive messages that are clear, concise, and accurate.

The week concluded with a joint trip — Fire and EMT students toured the Culpeper County Public Safety Communications Center and the Culpeper County Office of Emergency Services. Fire students also took part in a hands-on exercise where they had to guide each other in building a LEGO structure, using only radio communication and the skills they had practiced throughout the week.

This week, CTEC EMT students have been exploring Virtual Reality learning with the support of several members of the Culpeper County Volunteer Rescue Squad. The SIM X is a VR system pre-programmed with realistic EMS scenarios, allowing students to engage in hands-on, immersive training. This technology revolutionizes EMS education by enabling students to practice critical situations that would otherwise be difficult to replicate in traditional training. As VR technology advances, its role in education, healthcare, and professional training continues to expand, making it an invaluable tool for the future.
